Police Lesson: Social Network Tools Have Two Edges

Officer Trey Economidy of the Albuquerque police now realizes that he should have thought harder before listing his occupation on his Facebook profile as “human waste disposal.”
KOB.com
Officer Trey Economidy says a Facebook posting of his was “extremely inappropriate.”
After he was involved in a fatal on-duty shooting in February, a local television station dug up the Facebook page. Officer Economidy was placed on desk duty, and last month the Albuquerque Police Department announced a new policy to govern officers’ use of social networking sites.
Social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter can be valuable assets for law enforcement agencies, helping them alert the public, seek information about crimes and gather evidence about the backgrounds of criminal suspects. But the Internet can also get police departments into trouble.
Public gaffes like Officer Economidy’s — his cynical job description on Facebook was “extremely inappropriate and a lapse in judgment on my part,” he said last week in an e-mail — are only one of the risks. A careless posting on a networking site, law enforcement experts say, can endanger an officer’s safety, as it did in Santa Monica, Calif., last year when the Police Department went to great lengths to conceal a wounded officer’s identity and location, only to have a retired officer inadvertently reveal them on Facebook.
And defense lawyers increasingly scour social networking sites for evidence that could impeach a police officer’s testimony. In one case in New York, a jury dismissed a weapons charge against a defendant after learning that the arresting officer had listed his mood on MySpace as “devious” and wrote on Facebook that he was watching the film “Training Day” to “brush up on proper police procedure.”
In an Arkansas case, a federal appeals court cited as evidence of a police officer’s character photos he posted on MySpace showing him pointing a gun at the camera, flanked by a skull and the legend “the PUNISHER.”
The problem is serious enough that departments across the country are scrambling to develop rules to govern what officers can and cannot do online.
“This is something that all the police chiefs around the country, if you’re not dealing with it, you better deal with it,” said Mark A. Marshall, chief of police in Smithfield, Va., and the president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, which has developed its own model policy.
His department, Chief Marshall said, has had a few embarrassing episodes. In one, an officer who had been involved in a high-speed chase and ended up in “a little bit of a tussle” with a suspect posted a comment about what a good time he had during the dust-up. In another, an officer posted a photo of a tattoo of St. Michael on her hip. Both were disciplined, Chief Marshall said.
“Unfortunately, you have these extreme incidents that are out there,” he said, “and, candidly, you ask yourself, What on earth were they thinking when they posted that?”
Most social media policies try to balance a police department’s interests against First Amendment protections for the officers. Many include prohibitions against posting any statements that could discredit or reflect badly on a department, that illustrate reckless behavior or that disparage people based on race, religion or sexual orientation. Posting crime scene photos or other evidence from criminal cases online is also prohibited by most policies.
Others go further. Albuquerque’s policy, for example, prohibits officers from identifying themselves as employees of the Police Department or posting photos of departmental insignia — badges, uniforms, cruisers — without permission. And a recent policy by the Police Department in Pueblo, Colo., bans gossiping online with outsiders about department affairs.
“The question of when employees can be disciplined for off-duty speech is hazy,” he said. “Part of our core nature is what we do for a living, and to prohibit somebody from engaging in any kind of expression related to their job is arguably too broad.”
In fact, the Albuquerque policy has met some resistance from the rank and file. Joey Sigala, president of the Albuquerque Police Officers’ Association, said that while the department was entitled to dictate what officers wear and say on the clock, “I don’t believe they have the right to tell us what to do outside of that.”
He said that requiring officers to get permission before posting pictures involving department insignia made it difficult to share news about awards or honors spontaneously with family and friends. “They’re taking away the ability to demonstrate the good, as well as the bad,” he said.
Chief Ray Schultz of the Albuquerque police said that department officials researched policies from around the nation before developing their own.
“You need to get a handle on this very quickly, because this has the potential to damage the reputation of the organization and also adversely affect you in the courtroom,” Chief Schultz said, adding that some social media sites appeared to be “like the bathroom wall of 20 years ago, except now the entire world can see it.”
His department, he said, has hired a compliance officer to investigate the online presence of any police officer “who comes to the attention of the department,” by examining social network pages and running the officer’s name through Google.
Media coverage is often what prompts a department into action. The Indiana State Police initiated its policy after WTHR in Indianapolis discovered photos of drunken revels on a trooper’s Facebook page. One showed the trooper, Chris Pestow, with a .357 Magnum pointed at his head. He also posted a comment about a homeless man beaten by police officers in California, saying, “These people should have died when they were young, anyway, i’m just doing them a favor,” according to the report by WTHR.
After the controversy, Trooper Pestow resigned, said First Sgt. David Bursten, a spokesman for the State Police. He said he instructs new police officers, “Don’t do or say anything that you wouldn’t be proud to have your mother see or hear.”
“That really sums it up,” he said.
Asked about his experience, Mr. Pestow said in an e-mail, “A written policy concerning social media from the Indiana State Police prior to my unfortunate misstep would have benefited me considerably.”
Chief Joseph E. Thomas Jr. of the Southfield, Mich., police said that when it comes to social media, it is important for departments to enforce discipline even for small infractions. He cited one instance when an officer photographed goats on a resident’s rooftop before confiscating the animals, then posted the photos. The officer was told to remove the photos from the site and given a verbal reprimand.
“That was cute and it was something that did not harm anybody, but it’s inappropriate,” Chief Thomas said.
He said department officials routinely checked police recruits’ social networking pages when they apply for a job. In one case, he said, a candidate posted this update on Facebook:
“Just returned from the interview with the Southfield Police Department and I can’t wait to get a gun and kick some ass.”
He was rejected.

  1. 1. A police official stating his job as 'human waste disposal'. That's not right because all human lives are precious and not wasteful. Even Ex-convicts are not waste. It was a very insensitive move on his part. I would simply have put my job as a police official.

    2. Vulgarities, Insults, Personal attacks on students or teachers and continuoes ranting about your day.

    3. It can be used as a place for communication of messages (or in our case, group projects), be it private group chat, gruop pages, wall posts or private messages.

    4. Usually I would Ignore it unless it's a personal attack or might cause a public outrage. In that case, I would just report the person, account and content after taking a screenshot as evidence. If it's a personal attack to such a terriblr extent on me, I might file a police report because I'm evil and because I can. :)

  2. 1) In Santa Monica, Calif., last year when the Police Department went to great lengths to conceal a wounded officer’s identity and location, only to have a retired officer inadvertently reveal them on Facebook. If I am the police officer I will mind my own business.

    2)Vulgarities.

3)It can be use as a place for people to post pictures of their happy moment, discuss group projects, etc.

4)I will tell the person that post that information that the information is wrong. If he insists that he is right i will flag it as inappropriate.

  3. 1. A police officer who states that his job is to 'dispose'criminals, who are referred to by him as 'waste disposal', is an example where Facebook is used inappropriately by the police. I would have simply stated my job as a police officer.

    2. Vulgarities, racist insults, and words directed to any individual perosn that might hurt his/her feelings deeply are stuff that should not be posted on any networking tools.

    3. Facebook, Twitter are essential networking tools that people cannot live without. They are not to be used as a place to hurl vulgarities, amd abuse at anybody, but a place for people to communicate with one another through chat rooms, or to discuss about something-that is meaningful, of course.

    4. I usually ignore posts like these, and report them on what they are doing. However, in worst-case scenarios, I would definitely hand the matter over to the higher-ups.

  4. 1. Social networking sites such as Facebook have infiltrated our lives. Identify an example in which Facebook was used incorrectly by the police officers? What would you have done?
A police officer posted on MySpace a photo showing him pointing a gun at the camera, flanked by a skull and the legend “the PUNISHER.” Every human has the right to live and have equal rights. By calling himself the punisher, he is actually insulting all other humans as this position himself somewhere greater than all others as he has the extra right to punish by killing. By doing what is shown in the picture, he is not been sensitive and did not care for the feeling of others. If I was him, I will not even take the photo in the first place, let alone uploading the photo onto a public website.

    2. “Don’t do or say anything that you wouldn’t be proud to have your mother see or hear.” As students, give examples of things you should not say or put on Facebook?
Some examples of things we should not do are insulting, leave hurting comments on others’ photos and put up others’ disgraceful photos.

    3. How can Facebook be used to the benefit of yourself as well as your fellow Singaporeans?
Facebook as a social network can be used to promote important ideas such as healthy lifestyle as the platform allow many to see and browse through easily. Also, events could be holding on the webpage and embrace bonds between Singaporeans. A right use of social platform is the recent Japan earthquake which people use the network to locate survivals and indicate the shops that are selling food. Singapore can learn from this real life example and set up groups and organizations on Facebook.

    4. If you encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, what steps should one take rectify the situation?
Normally, I will just ignore the information as long as it is not too hurting and insulting. However, when it is too much for me, I will just send the owner a message to ask him or her to take the information off. If he or she still does not listen to me, I will just report the case to the person in charge of the website and ask him to ban the IP so they will never upload those inappropriate informations ever again.

  5. 1. The police officer stated his job as a 'waste disposal', which is a disgrace to the whole
Police academy as he is not proud of his job. If I were him, I would simply put my job as a police officer and be proud of it.

    2. I think as students, we should not swear or insult others on Facebook as this is a way of cyber bullying, which is a Crime in Singapore.

    3. I think Facebook is a useful social networking site as it allows students like us to communicate with our friends and enable us to chat with friends even if they are overseas.

    4. If I encounter inappropriate information on
Facebook, firstly, I would ignore it, but once it goes out of hand and the person post statuses that insults me, I would file a police report and sue him/her.

  6. 1) One of the police officers posted that he was watching the film “Training Day” to “brush up on proper police procedure.” This is wrong as it may influence people to think that the police force do not have proper procedures and may cause the public to think badly about the police force. If it was me, I would not mention anything about it at all and just remain silent.

2)Firstly, I think we should not put comments that may hurt or insult other people such as our classmates because that would be cyberbullying and not only will the victim be mentally hurt, the bully would also have to face punishments. Secondly, we also should not post vulgarities on the internet as it reflects badly upon ourselves and i think that the best way to win someone is beating them at politeness. Thirdly, we should not post things that discriminates other races as it may lead to disputes that may eventually lead to war.

3)Facebook can have many benefits to everyone. Firstly, we can post important information or new updates about school work that can notify students easily. Secondly, we can do group discussions about projects and we would not need to meet up face to face. Thirdly, friends can chat with us and we can interact more with them so that we can remain a strong relationship between us. Lastly, there are games to play that can help students to relieve stress at school or at home.

    4) If it is comments that hurt me personally, I will try to find where the problems lies in and try to resolve it so that the issue would not become worse. However, if he/she continues to post comments that hurt me, I would treat it as cyberbullying and tell my teacher about it so that the teacher can solve the problem. I may also make a police report if things really goes out of hand.

Q1.Social networking sites such as Facebook have infiltrated our lives. Identify an example in which Facebook was used incorrectly by the police officers? What would you have done?

a candidate posted this update on Facebook:
“Just returned from the interview with the Southfield Police Department and I can’t wait to get a gun and kick some ass.” i would have told at most told my family members or tell it to myself if i was the policemen

Q2.“Don’t do or say anything that you wouldn’t be proud to have your mother see or hear.” As students, give examples of things you should not say or put on Facebook?

I should not put things that are insulting to a religion or a race. in short anything insensitive should not be posted on facebook

Q3.How can Facebook be used to the benefit of yourself as well as your fellow Singaporeans?

in times of need, we could use facebook as a tool to ask for help. we could see multiple friends who are online and free that can be asked for help instead of calling them one by one for help which is a waste of time

Q4.If you encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, what steps should one take rectify the situation?

i would copy them on to a Microsoft word document and inform the police or teacher depending on the severity on the scenario who would handle the situation

  8. 1. An example is a police officer listing his occupation as “human waste disposal”. It was inappropriate to name your own job especially a job of a police officer with something offensive. “Human waste disposal” may have meant that his job was to sacrifice himself for others, this can result in the reputation of the job. If I were a policeman, even if I had the same thought as he is, I would have kept it to myself as posting offensive or insulting or anything that can harm the reputation of something or someone can be caught and it was also very inappropriate.

2.On Facebook, it is suppose to be a site where you can share your happy experiences and holiday photos and stuffs with friends and families. However, using facebook to scold someone or something indirectly or directly is not very appropriate. If the person you are insulting happened to see, you can be charged for it if the person reports this to the authorities. Not only these, posing racists’ comments or statuses can lead you to jail too. It is better to think carefully before posting anything online as everything we say might become a serious matter.

3.In times of emergency, facebook can be used to communicate with my friends easier and more convenient. Private groups can be created in facebook and in terms where messages had to be sent to everyone urgently, not only can it be sent through sms but facebook too. With private groups, discussions about homework can be made online too without MSN. Not only these, photos can be uploaded into these private groups for everyone to see, however in MSN, when in a chatroom of more than 2 persons, photos cannot be shared therefore it is an advantage for having facebook. Facebook had certainly brought to our fellow Singaporeans and other people great convenience and accessibility.

4.If it’s not a very serious matter, I may want to ask the person to remove and maybe an apology to everyone for posting an inappropriate information on Facebook. If it’s a very serious matter, I may report it to an adult to let the elder take the necessary actions towards the person.

  10. 1)One of the police officer stated his job as “human waste disposal.” This indicated that he thinks that the criminals that he caught were all “human waste”. By saying so, it also tells us that he was not proud of his job. If I were him, I would just state my job as a police officer.

2)I think that vulgarities and insults to others should not be post on facebook. As using vulgarities on facebook would give others an impression that we are not well-brought up and will tarnish our school reputation if others see it. Besides that, insulting other races and religions is not an appropriate thing to do as Singapore is a multi-racial country so we should respect others people races. In conclusion we should think of the consequences and put yourself into others peoples’ shoes before posting any comments.

3)Facebook allows us to share things and news with others, able to have group discussion and promoting ideas to others. One such example is the recent earthquakes that hit Japan that causes massive destruction in the country. Despite the fact that their country is in a mess, but the locals still post on facebook to inform others the location where they could buy foods and petrol. Besides that, others also use facebook to create a group or organisation to help Japan, encouraging others to donate.

4)If I encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, I would first tell the person to remove them as soon as possible and apologise. However, if he turned a deaf ear to it, I will report to the police and let them settles the matter.

    2) Insults of people or vulgarities.
    3) It can to be used for old friends to chat for awhile and catch up with each other's life. It could also be used to spread messages to a group of people.
    4) I would try to inform the person to changed the incorrect information ASAP.

  12. 1. I would not have said social network sites have infiltrated our lives, rather it is whether we choose to let it infiltrate our lives. Police officers had taken photos of their military insignias or photos of themselves pointing a gun at the camera. This shows disrespect for their job, their just flaunting the fact that they get a gun and are able to use it legally or to make themselves look good. I would'nt have done that instead I would have been a little more conservative and nto flash this privelleage openly.

2.Inappropriate or uncouth words are best not to be posted on facebook, stuff that would not disgrace yourself or your family.

3.Facebook is a good way to keep in touch with your friends or distant relatives now that you can catch up with them every now and then to take a look at their wall or statuses and see how things have been going in their life. Communication among students are easy and free for all to use. Meetups can be arranged in an easy and fast manner without needing to pick up the phone or type an SMS.

4.If is something minor or unimportant, I would cjoose to ignore the inappropriate post, just note the person and itt will leave a bad impression but if the post was something really bad and could really get the person in a lot of trouble like cyber bullying or anything, it would be best to click the option "report user" at the sidebar of the page.

  13. 1. An example in which facebook was used incorrectly by police officers is that an Officer of the Albuquerque police force has listed 'human waste disposal' under his occupation in facebook. If i was him, i would not have done that. Instead, after knowing that as police officer, they should not post their real occupation on the internet, i will either not list anything under 'occupation' or change it to something more in general.
    2. As students, i feel that we should not use the internet to insult or reprimand others of other race (racism) as well as refrain from using vulgarities.
    3. Facebook can benefit us in a way that it can help to promote current events happening around Singapore and provide us with detailed information on the event as there are group pages for us to do that in facebook.
    4. If i encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, i will first inform an adult or a teacher and consult them on what should we do next.

  17. 1. A police recruit candidate updated his status as “Just returned from the interview with the Southfield Police Department and I can’t wait to get a gun and kick some ass.” This is wrong as outsiders who view his facebook profile will have the false impression that the Police Department treats firearms and the usage of firearms as a joke. Civilians will then feel very insecure, thinking that the police, who are supposed to maintain the peace and security in the area, are not taking their job seriously. If I were the candidate, I would have kept this information secret as this would hint to criminals that I may soon become a police officer.

    2. We should choose our words carefully and refrain from using vulgarities and openly insulting others on the internet. Our parents spend a lot of time teaching us good internet etiquette and we should not let their efforts go to waste just by unnecessarily insulting others.

    3. With access to the internet becoming readily available in many parts of the world nowadays, important information can be passed around easily and at a very fast rate, even faster than conventional methods such as text messaging. As such, students will be able to inform each other about last minute changes regarding school issues very quickly, thus preventing further complications.

    4. If the situation is serious, I would first inform the author of the inappropriate information to remove the information. If he refuses to comply, I will then inform a teacher or an adult and request for their help in solving the problem.

  18. 1. A police recruits' posted "Just returned from the interview with the Southfield Police Department and I can't wait to get a gun and kick some ass." This is extremely wrong as it sounds like this police recruit is about to go on a firing spree. It sounds as if he was not treating his job seriously and would like to have some fun with handling guns. This would cause the people to think that the police are people who do not treat their jobs seriously. Also, they would not dare to entrust their lives in the police department's hands. If it was me, I would have phrased the sentence and make it sound serious. I would also not disclose information about myself being a police and receiving a firearm.

    2. As a student, I would refrain from using vulgarities and making false claims on the internet. In modern days, many students use vulgarities widely on the internet, especially blogs and social networking sites. Some students like to brazenly flame people on the internet, causing alot of trouble as the two parties start having conflicts. I would also not post undesirable content on Facebook.

    3. Using social networking sites like Facebook has become a trend among teenagers. Therefore, important messages can be circulated around extremely fast, making things more convenient for us. Schools should make use of Facebook and use it to conduct E-Learning as teenagers these days understand how Facebook functions operate. Compared to the troublesome and tedious process of visiting E-Learning portals that malfunction every year, the students would definitely prefer using Facebook than the E-Learning portals.

4.If anyone encounters inappropriate information on Facebook, they should first warn the person that posted this information to remove the post. I would also state the reason why this particular post that made me unhappy. If he/she refuses to heed my advice, I would relate the situation to an authoritative adult and ask for his/her help. The other party would be aware of the severity of posting undesirable information on the web by then. In cases whereas the other party posts insulting messages about me, I would take legal action and bring him to court.

    2. I think that they should not post vulgarities and other in appropriate things. They should also not post things that insults friends or other people.
    3. Facebook can be use to communicate with our friends around us. We can also learn there when we are absent from school, as our friends can post what is going on in school. The people in Singapore can also know about more information about certain activities.
    4. I would report it to someone in charge of this and would ask him to take it down. I would also not go to that page. If it is my friend, I would ask him or her to remove it and say that it is inappropriate

  20. 1.An example was that the police officer listed his occupation as a 'human wastrel disposal'. This is a disgrace to other policemen, he should be proud of his own job. Catching criminals is bringing justice to everyone and they should be passionate about it and continue to serve the country. Everyone can change, those criminals can change into a better future if they have the determination to become a better person. It is totally incorrect to insult those criminals. If I was the police man I would not post such insulting comments, instead I would continue to serve the country by capturing the criminals so that they would know their mistakes and not to repeat them again.

2.Firstly, before posting anything, we must think twice, considering if our comments are racist or insulting to others. We must think of the consequences of our actions. We should not post vulgarities or insulting comments.

3.Facebook can be very useful to many people in need. For example, during exams, we could post some encouraging comments. So that when our friends saw our post they could be more determined to study hard for their exams. By posting such stuffs, people would have a positive mind and would do the correct thing.

4.If I encounter any inappropriate information on Facebook, firstly, I would warn that person to stop posting such information. I would try to persuade him to think twice before posting such comments. However, if he refuses to listen, I would then inform any adults or teachers to try to convince him to stop repeating his mistake.

  21. 1. one example could be the officer who posted a photo of a tatoo on her hip. i feel that as a police officer, such photos should be kept for personal interest and not being shared with so many people.
    2. i felt that vulgar or comments regarding discrimmination should never be put on Facebook for everyone to see. If one feels resulted seeing the comment, there will be terrible consequences for the person who posted it.
    3. It allows us to share informations on the net in a quick and convenient way. We do not have to meet up face to face. it also encourages more interaction and bonding between everyone as we can access to each other's photos and personal information online.
    4. I would first report to the admin if the Facebook and discourage my friends from visiting the site.

  22. Qn 1. Facebook was used incorrectly by the police officers when one of them actually posted a photo of a tattoo of St. Michael on her hip. It was extremely wrong to do so because as a police officer, it is only right to exercise self-discipline and the members of the public look up upon the jobs of the police officers’ as a courageous and well-disciplined one. By posting a picture of one’s bare skin on face book, it will give the public a bad impression that police officers do not have self-discipline and that she does not have a sense of shame which might results in the public not respecting the police officers anymore, causing dire consequences in the end. If I were her, I would certainly not post such photos of myself which actually reveal any true skin that will disgrace myself. If I really want to flaunt my tattoos to my friends, I will only save the picture in my phone and show it to them directly instead.

Qn 2. As a student myself, I think that it is only right that we do not post any comments which are racist against any religion or comments which might hurt other people, be it physically or mentally. These actions will only reflect badly on ourselves and might even concern our parents in some severe cases. Such comments are definitely not ‘cool’ as youngsters these days might think. Instead, others will only think of the child as an ill-mannered one and is not properly taught by his parents and with that, the parents, whom are not even related to the comments their child had posted, will become inflicted. Also, I think that students should not post any vulgarities on the Internet because such coarse words would reflect badly on three aspects, your parents, your school you are attending and yourself and these words certainly does not fit well with the child with excellent upbringing like you. Thus, one should never post vulgarities or racist comments on the Internet.

Qn 3. Facebook are extremely popular these days and it certainly has its reasons for being such a popular website these days. Firstly, facebook can be used to locate any of one’s friends whom he have not seen for a long period of time. Also, it can act as a ‘bridge’ to help people whom are naturally shy with strangers to overcome their problem and become more confident in themselves and makes conversations with stranger or people you are unfamiliar with less awkward. Not only so, facebook can also allow people to keep updates on their profile pages which enables others to know of what a particular friend you have not seen in awhile is going on with his/her own life. In addition, recent news that is happening both nationally or internationally will be posted on face book which gives others a brief idea on what is happening around the world, example, the recent 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami happening in the northeast of Japan.

Qn 4. Should I encounter any inappropriate information on face book, the first thing that I will do to rectify the situation is by asking the culprit in a nice manner to remove his/her post on facebook and inform them that it is wrong of them to commit such an act. However, if they turned a deaf ear to my remarks and take the matter lightly, I would take a screenshot of their comments on face book and pass it to any of my teachers. If the matter really goes out of hand, I would definitely not hesitate to go to the police.

  23. 1) An example was a police officer posting a character photo on MySpace showing him pointing a gun at the camera, flanked by a skull and the legend “the PUNISHER.” By doing this, he is drawing unwise attention to himself by flanking his authority and mocking others. If it was me, I would remain undercover as what a policeman should do and post a normal photo of myself or even no photo at all.

    2) I should not post things that would hurt or discriminate others, such as flaming one's co-curricular activity or posting ungraceful photos of others for the public to see. I should also refrain from posting vulgarities as it would displease some people and also have a bad influence on myself and others.

    3) Useful groups can be created to provide important information for users, such as the recent disasters in Japan, where a group was created to ask for help and donations. School relevant materials can also be posted to keep students on track with their assignments.

    4) Unless it is someone of a higher authority, I would state my true opinion of the inappropiate information that the person has posted, even if it may lead to an argument. Standing back and not doing anything about it would make me feel angry inside so I would rather flame him than let myself feel the impact.

  24. 1) For example, a police officer actually posted a picture of a tattoo on St. Micheal on her hip. I would not posted any thing that reveals my own body parts, especially on social networks such as Facebook. If i want to show my friends or other people, i would just show to them directly and personally.
    2) I would not put vulgarities on Facebook. also, i would certainly think twice before posting anything on social networks as some things might be insulting to other people or races. Also, i would not posted anything on social networks only if necessary.
    3) Facebook can be used as a chatting matter. For example, one can chat with his or her friends from another nation easily, without using the phone which might cost expensive. Also, Facebook provides conversation with one another without facial apperance. This is actually good for people who are shy to make friends and also good for one to chat with a unknown person.
    4) I would certainly consult the person even i don't know him. this would be easy as Facebook is large and easy to track down the person. If not, i would certainly voice out my opinions even though it might be risky, but certainly, i would not let that person to go away free after doing such a disgrace act.

  26. 1) Officer Trey Economidy of the Albuquerque police listed his occupation on his Facebook profile as “human waste disposal.” Maybe he was just trying to be humorous but his actions clearly indicate that he looks down on his job and deems it as unimportant. What he did may also be an insult to other police officers. If I were him, I would not have been so impulsive nor acted without thinking.
    2) As students, we should not insult or criticize people on Facebook. We have to think before putting something up. What we put up not only affects others, but it may also bring the law to us. Cyber bullying might also cause victims to be hurt because what we put up can be seen by everyone, affecting the morale of victims. If we are really not happy about someone else’s actions and behaviour, we should just talk to him or her personally instead of letting it known to everyone. Making it known to others would not solve the problem. Instead, it might even aggravate the situation.
    3) Facebook is a social network where we can communicate with one another without having to meet up. We can provide information about school work or even discuss about recent popular news topics. Besides that, users can express their feelings about things like work, etc. Friends and family then can provide advice and encouragement to spur the user on.
    4) If I encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, I would just post a comment to tell the person not to be so vulgar or hurtful. I would tell them that it is dangerous to do that on the internet, something everyone has access to. If it’s someone who is closer to me, I would either speak to that person personally or just send a text to tell him or her about it. This would cause him to her to realize the mistake because he or she is being corrected through care and concern. He or she will know that it is not a trivial issue and it cannot be neglected.

  27. 1. The police officer mentioned that his job was "human waste disposal". He had shamed his occupation which is an occupation he should be proud of. I would have just simply stated that my job was a police officer.

    2. We should not put statuses/comments on facebook that would defame others, hurt others or embarrass others. Also, we must not use vulgarities. In addition,we should not upload pictures/videos or anything that is offensive to others or against the law, such as racist comments or jokes.

    3. Facebook is a good way to keep in touch with relatives and old friends. It is also a platform to express our interests, thoughts and connect with other people. Besides, facebook groups or pages can be very inspirational. Besides the above, facebook can be used as a communication tool so as to be up-to-date.

    4. I would talk to the person about posting the information online and request them to rectify it. Then I would find out the reason why the person would post such information. However, if the person refuses to remove the information, I would consult an adult or someone who has the authority to make sure that person removes the information.

  28. 1. 1. A police recruits' posted "Just returned from the interview with the Southfield Police Department and I can't wait to get a gun and kick some ass." In general, a police officer is a person that helps to maintain law and order in a country. He made it sound like he got the gun for fun and is about to go on a killing spree. If the public has word about it, the police force would lose its trust. If it was me, i would not reveal anything to the public even my identity.

    2. I think we should refrain from posting vulgarities on the internet. As students, we should keep our identity in check. Always spare a thought for others before commenting or posting anything. If something you post cause unhappiness and even hatred, conflicts might take place and the matter will escalate.

    3. With the ever rising popularity of social networking sites, more teenagers are hooked on to sites like facebook. On the bright side however, relay systems and group discussions can be carried more easily and efficiently.

    2. On facebook, we should not post vulgarities and use uncouth languages which shows racism or insult anyone. We should choose our words wisely!
    3. With access to the internet, students should make good use of it and spread important messages to all over the world, for example, the aftermath of Japan's Tsunami and Earthquake. I actually found out through social network such as the twitter and facebook.

  31. 1.Social networking sites such as Facebook have infiltrated our lives. Identify an example in which Facebook was used incorrectly by the police officers? What would you have done?

One of the police officers listed his occupation as a "human waste disposal". He has no respect for ex offenders at all and in my opinion, he is not suitable to be a policeman. The police are people who helps to change the bad into good, but this job he listed just shows that he enjoys not changing the person, but destroy him. If it was me, i would just have left that section blank. i am not prejudiced against anyone and i believe policemen are just the same as any other job- they serve the country in a way .

I can use facebook to keep in touch with my former classmates, discuss projects and to play games to relax.

    1. Officer Trey Economidy of the Albuquerque Police Department listed his occupation on his Facebook page as a "Human waste disposal" This is inappropiate as by putting that as his occupation he is defaming the police force . In my opinions , the police is not just to arrest criminals and get involved in high profile cases which involves shooting and lives. He actually treats his job just to kill criminals and thats all. If i was him , I would not even have filled up information about my occupation.

    2. We should not spew vulgarities , too much personal information and critisism about others. Also , racists remarks and jokes. Lastly , indiscriminating pictures of others and ourselves.

  38. 1) The police officer have misused the rights of facebook by typing that he was a "human waste disposal". In my opinion, this officer is a police officer whose job is to not only catch criminals but allow the criminals to have an opportunity to turn over a new leaf and change for the better. He should also have a sense of justice and know right from wrong. Being a police officer, his thinking is also wrong. He should feel that he is a morally righteous person who should take pride in his job and not treat his job in this manner. If i were him, i would appreciate my job and post the truth with pride, that i am a police officer.

2)As students, we should be aware of the publicism of the internet and refrain from posting inappropriate information that will offend others. This includes not writing any vulgarities or information that will cause others anger. We should not criticise others on the net and should put it in mind that the internet is for everyone.

3)Facebook is a social network to enable communication between everyone. We can post videos, photographs and personal feelings on everyday life on the net for everone to see. Personally, i can communicate with friends and families. This includes long-lost friends that i have lost contact with. With facebook, Singaporeans can easily contact with others and will get to know one another better.

  42. 1)A careless posting on a networking site, for example in Santa Monica, Calif., last year when the Police Department went to great lengths to conceal a wounded officer’s identity and location, only to have a retired officer inadvertently reveal them on Facebook. the officer should not have posted such important informtion on face book, and as a retired officer he should have know the consequences of his actions yet he posted the information on facebook.maybe it has become a habit for them to post about their daily lives on facebook, but such posts have large consequences and i feel that we should all make sure what we post on facebook is appropriate. if i was the officer, i would not even post the whereabouts or information as i would have understood that such information should be withheld within the police department themselves.

    2) there are certain topics which i believe should be taboo on facebook. personal attacks, racism, using of vulgarities towards other, posts that reflect how bad our moral conduct is. we should be careful and not post comments that would only cause us trouble. of course posts congratulating others or random comments that are directed to no one in particular, quotes etc are acceptable. sometimes we are not aware of the fact that what we post might greatly affect others, such as personal insults that might cause a person's morale to be lowered drastically, or make someone upset to the point where they are unable to withstand the mental torture.we must be very careful of what we post on facebook.

3)facebook is able to connect everyone together, enable us to comunicate with one another easily. certain groups help people find common interests, understand their friends better. extend their social network, get to know people with the same interests as them. also, the upcoming elections, many members have facebooks to help singaporeans understand better, or groups of stores and merchandises in sinapore enable us to do online shopping ore easily, pages of our favourite atristes, bands, djs help us understand our stars better. facebook connects everyone together, and singaporeans can create their own groups such as a singlish group, chingay 2011 and more.help companies to advertise. everyone has facebook now. facebook is a platform where we can voice our opinions too, sinaporeans come together for major events, posting comments on facebook.

4)first of all if it does not concerns me or has any relations to me, i would probably choose to ignore it as i do not wish to get into any unnecessary trouble. but if i strongly feel negatively towards such a comment or that it is really inappropriate, i would tell the author to remove the comment. facebook is for us to voice our opinions, but it does not mean that we can post comments that have negative connotations or reflects badly on ourselves. we should think twice before posting such comments. also, i could flag the comment as inappropriate, report the content as offensive.

  44. 1. 3. Facebook can be used as a network for communication where we can discuss and share our opinions for project purposes. It can also be used as a place for us to keep in touch with our ex-classmates and teachers.

    4. Firstly, I would talk to the author and persuade him to remove the content he posted. If he refuses to do so, I would take a picture of the post and show it as evidence to the discipline committee in our school or report the case to the police if it becomes serious.

It will greatly affect the reputation of the police department. I would have just listed my real job or completely not post anything related to my career.

    2) Do not leak too much personal information on facebook. For example, hand phone numbers, address. Also, facebook should not be used to criticize and chastise others. Vulgarities should not be used too.

    3) Facebook can be used as a form of media to advertise or promote activities or events. Also, information can be sent to everyone instantly to notify them of an upcoming event. Furthermore, on Facebook, people can catch up with recent news and trend. For example, the Japan disaster. Almost immediately after the incident, the news of the disaster was broadcasted and spread throughtout social networking sites. Actions could be carried out quickly to raise funds and help Japan. Many people made use of social networking sites to gather support and funds for charity organisations and volunteer work. Hence facebook can be used by us to spread messages quickly and to get responses fast. We can also share photos and communicate with overseas family or friends more efficiently.

    4) Request for the person to remove the information or to report the post. However, depending on the context of the information, I would choose to ignore it. We have to be responsible of what we post on facebook. So the person who posted the information has to take responsibility if anything happens.

Things such as vulgarities, religious criticism and racism are some examples of things that we should not put on Facebook. We need to be careful of what we post as people may look at us differently when we post some things that we should not on Facebook.

3)Well, we can post words of encouragement to people who are going to out of school exams. As a result, they will be motivated to study or strive harder to not let us down and do well in their respective exams. It also can be used to discuss group projects or form a study group to better motivate each other and to also learn from one another. It is also a platform for friends to communicate with each other and to also chat with primary school friends who do not share the same school as we do. It is also to promote healthy lifestyle programmes and quit smoking campaigns and other meaningful activities. It is also a easier and convenient way of communication as instead of calling everyone in class to inform them on a particular topic, it is easier to post a comment on Facebook and just tag everyone. An example of a useful way of using social networking websites is that of the Japan’s triple disaster. Locals post on Facebook where the victims can find food and petrol and also gather funds through Facebook, urging the people of Japan to be united and not fret in times of difficulty. Lastly, teachers use Facebook to inform us on our holiday
homework which I think is efficient and also convenient.

    4) I would usually ignore it and let it go. However, if it is a personal attack or it might cause an outrage, I would also flag it as inappropriate. I will also send the owner a message to delete it and not post such stuff again as it is wrong. If the owner insists that he will not delete that post, I will just have to report to the teacher or parent. If he is still stubborn and insists that he is right, I will complain to the person in charge and ban the IP so that the owner will never post such stuff again and it serves him right for being so stubborn and for posting such comments. If I am being evil for the day, I will just straight away file a police report with no hesitation and let the police deal with him/her. >:)

1)An example is that a police official stated that his job as 'human waste disposal'. In my opinion, this is not right as every single life, from the ants to convicts, are all precious and not waste. Secondly, this indicated that he thinks that the criminals that he caught were all “human waste” and are not at all precious. Criminals are still humans, and making mistakes is inevitable, it is just so happen that they made a great mistake that needs the law to correct them. Criminals still can repent and change and not to the extreme to be called waste. Secondly, it is inappropriate to list your occupation as ‘human waste disposal’, especially if you are a police officer. Indirectly, it means that he is not proud of his job. If I were him, I would just simply list my occupation as police official or not list it at all. Will it hurt to not put your occupation as ‘human waste disposal’? However, in a different point of view, he should not even list his real occupation. This will not only lead to criminals to know that this guy is a police officer, it will also danger his family as criminals might want to harm this police officer that called them as waste.

    2) In my opinion, vulgarities should not be posted on Facebook. This will not only damage your reputation but is also very crude and shows that you are not well brought up with proper manners and very vulgar. It will also lead to many more implications like the reputation of your school or your teachers and parents. Secondly, racist comments that refer to any religion or race should also not be posted on social networking sites as it may hurt people mentally. Such actions will only reflect on your personality and badly on yourself. It may seem to be cool, but it is actually uncool and shows how ill mannered you are. Your parents may also be inflicted and may be critised for not bringing you up well. Thirdly, criticizing or discriminating friends on social networking sites are also inappropriate and rude. It is not nice to scold people vulgar words and it may be considered as cyber bullying. It may demoralise the victim and cause him to feel discriminated and lonely, occasionally thinking of leaving this world and you might never know one simple comment on a person and change that person dramatically. Our parents spent years teaching us, educating us, making us useful people for society, hence, we should learn the proper internet etiquettes and not shame them by our vulgar and crude posts. Therefore, vulgarities, racist comments, criticism is inappropriate to be posted on such social networking sites, because our actions will have consequences.

  54. Questions
    1. Social networking sites such as Facebook have infiltrated our lives. Identify an example in which Facebook was used incorrectly by the police officers? What would you have done?

Facebook was incorrectly used by the police officers when one of them posted a photo of a tattoo of St. Michael on her hip. It was extremely wrong to do so because as a police officer, it is only right to exercise self-discipline and the members of the public look up upon the jobs of the police officers’ as a courageous and well-disciplined one. By posting a picture of one’s bare skin on face book, it will give the public a bad impression of police officers which might results in the public not respecting the police officers, creating trouble. If I were her, I would never post such photos of myself, which will disgrace myself. The Internet is open to everyone; I would rather be safe than sorry. The Internet is a dangerous place, privacy is always invaded, and hence I would never post anything that would disgrace myself in front of the whole world.

    2. “Don’t do or say anything that you wouldn’t be proud to have your mother see or hear.” As students, give examples of things you should not say or put on Facebook?

I think we should refrain from posting vulgarities on the Internet. As students, we should keep our identity in check. Always spare a thought for others before commenting or posting anything. If something you post cause unhappiness and even hatred, conflicts might take place and the matter will escalate. Also, things that will aggravate others should also be avoided. In order to avoid trouble and misunderstandings, we should never put our words publicly and create arguments over the Internet.

    3. How can Facebook be used to the benefit of yourself as well as your fellow Singaporeans?

    3) Facebook is able to connect everyone together, enable us to communicate with one another easily. Certain groups help people find common interests, understand their friends better. Extend their social network; get to know people with the same interests as them. Also, the upcoming elections, many members have facebooks to help Singaporeans understand better, or groups of stores and merchandises in Singapore enable us to do online shopping ore easily, pages of our favourite artistes, bands, this help us understand our stars better. Facebook connects everyone together, and Singaporeans can create their own groups such as a singlish group, chingay 2011 and more. It also helps companies to advertise and the ease of competitions’ information. Everyone has facebook now. Facebook is a platform where we can voice our opinions too; Singaporeans come together for major events, posting comments on Facebook.

    4. If you encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, what steps should one take rectify the situation?

Should I encounter any inappropriate information on face book, the first thing that I will do to rectify the situation is by asking the culprit in a nice manner to remove his/her post on facebook and inform them that it is wrong of them to commit such an act. However, if they turned a deaf ear to my advice and take the matter lightly, I would take a screenshot of their comments on facebook and pass it to any of my teachers. Also, I would most probably talk things out with the person should he/she be from another school. If it doesn’t work I would inform his/her parents and make sure the matter is settled by hook or by crook.
If the matter really goes out of hand, I would definitely not hesitate to go to the police.

  55. 1.An example would be Officer Trey Economidy of the Albuquerque police who listed his occupation on his Facebook profile as “human waste disposal.” This expression was taken as an insult as the human race was regarded as trashes that were useless. Also, disposing would mean getting rid of people who are useless. I would not have revealed any personal information about myself that would disclose my identity in the first place. Moreover, I would not even make unnecessary criticism on a social networking website.

2.We should never reveal our house address, phone number or personal information on Facebook as this would only attract unwanted attention from kidnappers, burglars etc that would result in the occurrence of more social problems. Vulgarities and harsh criticisms should not be made as these may offend some people.

3.Facebook enables people from all around to connect and interact with one another. It allows us to meet new friends and share our common interests with one another. By posting statues, uploading photos and sharing videos through a common space, people can deliver their messages across more efficiently. The chatroom can be used for project discussions as well. Facebook generates many conversational topics that can be brought out in our daily lives, for example, updated news about the crisis in Japan and the progress of the political election. With improvement in social networks, people are more aware of what is going on in the society and around the world.

4.I would request the person who posted the information to remove it and remind him or her about the consequences of posting inappropriate materials online. If the person refuses to heed my advice, I would choose to report or flag the content so that the content would be blocked, thus preventing more people from viewing it.

I felt that it was extremely inappropriate for the police official to state his job as "human waste disposal". All lives are sacred and precious, although the mistakes the criminals made may be unforgivable but still one should not have use that term and thinks that they are human waste.
If I were a police official, I will not put down anything under occupation not even government official. Since the topic is sensitive, why don't I just do myself a favor and stay out of the troubles and dangers that might happen to me or my family.

    2.
I felt that I would not put my personal information such as hand phone numbers or address. I felt that posting vulgarities should be avoided, I mean, there is other ways to release your anger or other emotions. The things we post are a reflection of ourselves, of how the school has taught us. There is always a way to track things posted online, it is not like a conversation that maybe after a few days it will be forgotten. Therefore, we would have to be more careful when posting on facebook or updating status.

    3.
Facebook allows us to receive information really fast. When there is an important announcement or news, Facebook would reach out to more people. As compared with broadcasting it on television or radio, Facebook is able to inform more people if they happened to miss out the broadcast. Also, facebook allows us to connect with the whole world without traveling. Like the recent Japan earthquake, I could stay at home to get a instant update on what has or is happening in Japan at that moment.

    4.
I would usually try not to interfere, as it is a platform where everyone could voice out his or her personal opinion. However, if the content were ridiculously inappropriate I would try to advice the person to remove the post and at the same time verify whether the information is really inappropriate. If I failed to persuade him or her, I would report to the Facebook team and ask them to block or remove the post.

Ans:.“Don’t do or say anything that you wouldn’t be proud to have your mother see or hear.” Well, as a student myself, I definitely would not be proud to have my mother see me posting inappropriate stuff such as vulgarities or mature themes on Facebook because first of all, there is nothing to be proud of, secondly, my mother absolutely would not be proud of my wrongdoings so I have nothing to be proud of either and last of all, I do not think I would not be in my right senses if I was to do such things. Other examples of things one should not post on Facebook are insulting comments on other races or religions, viruses, etc.

  60. 3:How can Facebook be used to the benefit of yourself as well as your fellow Singaporeans?

Ans: In response to this broad question, there are numerous various answers to it. For me, I will tap on the more significant advantages to myself as well as my fellow Singaporeans of using Facebook. With the recent Singapore general election, we can all infer that there is an obvious possible use of Facebook during this peroid. We can take part in the poll via Facebook and chip in our votes online which is a more convenient way of participating in the election because it could be done almost anywhere anytime as long as there is a computer and internet access. Another benefit Facebook provides the nation with is that anyone, including Singaporeans, can access the things other people upload onto it, which in other words, means that we can share information with one another quite conveniently such as the National Day messege, current affairs happening in Singapore, Japan's radiation queries and responses in relation to Singapore, etc. Facebook sure is a great invention that is a very useful tool to share thinking and ideas with people from everywhere in a short peroid of time conveniently.

  61. 4-If you encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, what steps should one take rectify the situation?

Ans: If one encounters inappropriate information on Facebook, one must be cautious upon encountering it. That is the first step in rectifying the situation, never approach it with haste and be rash in responding to it. One must weigh the situation before himself or herself before deciding on which path of actions to take up. If it is personal matters, such as a friend discriminating you by insulting you mildly, then either ignore and block the friend on Facebook, report spam, or settle things with he or she personally. However, if things turned out to be out of hand, one could report it to the in-charge authorities or parents who should be more experienced in handling situations like this, or if you are a student, report it to a teacher at school whom you feel is up to the task. There is one thing to bear in mind always. That is to remember to report any inappropriate stuff on Facebook immediately and not bring matters into your own hands as one wll never know what lies ahead, one may be pulled into the situation or even makes matters worse. Therefore, keep your senses and mind whenever one may encounter such problems.

Ans: An example is that a police official stated that his job as 'human waste disposal'. I would have stated my job as police officer or do not post my occupation. I feel that it was not right to state the job as 'human waste disposal' because all human lives are precious and not wasteful. It was insensitive for him to post such comments on networking sites which could be seen easily. I feel that police officers should be a role model for the public , they should be someone who we can learn from but this post have gave us an idea that policemen are disrespectful of human life and that they should not have the authority to arrest those who made mistakes, as they remain as guilty as some might be. His post may indirectly tarnish the whole reputation that the police force process and the image portray to the public. His post also shows that he was not proud of his job. I feel that everyone may/ will make mistake and are responsible for them. Making mistakes does not show that we are or will be a burden to the society, it just show the faults that we may have in our character, etc. We should not be judged as a waste as we can still contribute to the society despite some mistakes made. I feel that even ex-convicts can be given a chance, a chance to start anew, learning from mistakes. I think that policemen are people whom lead others to the correct path, helping others to learn and realize of their mistakes and not 'human waste disposal. I emphasized that criminals are still humans and making mistakes is inevitable, the law changes them, and police officer enforce the law to lead them.

Ans: If one encounters inappropriate information on Facebook, one must be cautious and careful upon encountering it. One must not react violently and aggressively to the situation as it might make things worse. If I was faced with this kind of situation, I will weigh my options and consider about the relationship with that person or what effects do it have on me. If it was something minor, I am likely to treat it as a joke, etc and let it go. If it was an insult, I will first reflect on myself whether I had done something hurtful to him, then I will talk to him nicely. If it was a serious personal attack, I will take action by saving the content, using it as evidence before reporting him to the authorities. If the inappropriate information is not dealt towards me, I would flag it as “inappropriate”, and then send a message to tell the owner to remove it. Further actions for example reporting it to the in-charge if the person refuse to do so.

If I am the police officer, I would not post this comment even though I am dissatisfied, if I posted it, I would delete it immediately.

2 As a student, I should not put my particulars on facebook. I also should not gossip or say bad things about my friend on facebook, post photo of my friend without their permission. I also should not be addictive of the games in facebook.

3 Facebook is a way of communication. It is something free and allows me to talk to my friend and family. Some of them may be overseas. That would also allow me to tell my friend my latest status. Singaporeans would also make friend with strangers, some may become future life partners.

The police officer simply showed his wrong opinion and image of his not-so-future job, as a policeman. A policeman doesn't kick-ass, sometimes it's the other way round. (: I would've said it was an ok- interview. Instead of trying to act cool about the job, which is pathetic. -___-
2)“Don’t do or say anything that you wouldn’t be proud to have your mother see or hear.” As students, give examples of things you should not say or put on Facebook?
    2) that runs to a long long list. But to summarize it, the ones that emerge at the top would be vulgarities, putting down of other people as well as flaming, no matter it was the other person's fault or anything. not only that, but statuses and photos that degrade yourself come very close.
3)How can Facebook be used to the benefit of yourself as well as your fellow Singaporeans?
Well, to the benefit of myself would be to interact more with others and find people from your childhood, as well as communicate more effectively with the people that surround me now. For my fellow...comrades, the same applies to them, as well as using Facebook as a means to relieve stress from academics.
4)If you encounter inappropriate information on Facebook, what steps should one take rectify the situation?
Reporting and flagging it as abuse would help but I doubt it really works. the best would be to tell the person to remove the offensive post. If nothing works, then leave it.
